Montpellier with Philip Glass…..

This past weekend, I was lucky enough to see my beloved Tim’s all time favourite, Einstein on the Beach, a seminal work from the seventies by Philip Glass with director Robert Wilson, to say it was off the wall, would be a close description, this four hour epic was incredible….and one that keeps growing in my imagination……being its premier season in Montpellier, we headed down to see it, through those amazing scenes of French countryside……and a what city we discovered, its centuries old centre is very romantic, whether you are working your way across the narrow alleys with fashion, gourmet and thrift clothing stores, through the student areas, for which it is known, this is unlike any University town I have seen before…..the food is quite amazing, hello, Chez Boris!  It’s a city built in so many layers due to its continual growth….modern as well as old and most definitely in character with the students who bring it to life…..a little left of center….

What’s Your Favourite T-shirt?

How genius is this? Penthouse magazine ask French legend Jean-Paul Goude to shoot New Yorkers in their favourite t-shirts……I think this shoot and the films Tootsie and Eyes of Laura Mars, capture what I love about New York in the seventies……they probably all went to Studio 54 after the shoot…..can you spot the up and comers? of course no one compares to Patti Smith, who even in the cheesiest moments proves she is always cool…..

Fun Times at Colette Carnaval…..Paris..

Inside the very tents, that had just been home to many amazing shows this last week in the Jardin des Tuileries, was the weekend carnival hosted by mini department store Colette, to celebrate their 15th birthday……..we headed over with much excitement late Saturday afternoon, to find the longest queue I have ever seen in my life to anything, anywhere…….luckily my friends had tickets for the party that evening…..so the good times did indeed roll!! I am now certain, that when it comes to festivals, events and carnivals, Paris does it best……….for every time I go to a special event, it seems that not only is the spirit of the theme manifested in it’s presentation but in the total atmosphere, food, music, people……for Colette’s magic extended to tapping into it’s select brands and a few special guests, to bring on the spirit of celebration….there was a dedicated Colette souvenier shoppee, fashion stands by Comme des Garcons, Kenzo, Maison Michel, Olympia Le Tan amongst others, sweet treats by Laduree, La Mere de Famille, skate ramps, a bowling alley, basketball courts and a sunglasses themed one by Theirry Lasry, a jewellery making table with Tatty Devine, the Cobrasnake selling t shirts, bands and so much more……..

Colette Carnaval…..1997 – 2012

The original concept store Colette is turning 15, they have managed like no other that came after them, to remain on the edge of all things new, their store still buzzes with newness, be it a well edited book selection, great dvds, luxury fashion on a plate, new exhibitions, the current one on by artist Darcel is genius, his portraits to become as collectible as Warhol’s were in the seventies……….celebrations have already begun but tomorrow it will be topped off with a 2 day carnival….special guests, dance classes and ice cream stands amongst the excitement to be had at the Jardin des Tuileries….see you there!

Balenciaga Spring.2012

All the new magazines are coming out, including the biannual editions, which are most exciting….Self Service, Lula, Encens amongst my favourites…..and with them, the new advertising campaigns that done right, are as good as the editorial….and my favourite so far this season is Balenciaga, shot by Steven Meisel and styled by Marie-Amelie Sauvé, it makes what could be perceived as a rather untouchable brand, modern and young….no fussy Parisian apartment for them, this is how real girls live………

Chloé……Fall 2012….Live…

Whilst working on my computer, out of nowhere a video pops up…obviously from some open website….and without seconds to lose…the Chloé show is streamed! Viola!! And what a beautiful show it was…by the third look, I knew something was going right…all the signature hues were present, with red highlights…..Claire Waight Keller showed why she is the Creative Director……..the layered looks worked with wool parkas, being at once dishevelled and totally lady like, my personal highlights being the lace overlay coats, tops and dresses with appliqué lace flowers, the ankle strap platforms, the new oversized bag, the gathered silk skirts the incredible asymmetrical sash top that will be seen in every magazine next season and the great use of knitwear, with cables worked into simpler jumpers and thick yarn multicoloured knit panels contrasted with jersey, every piece is destined to be worn and loved………this will become a Chloé classic……

In Search of Ursina Gysi…….

With the final days of Paris fashion week left…..I will try and make it to a couple more shows…..but who I really want to see, is the not so new but rather magical stylist, Ursina Gysi, she is a former model who assists the other amazing stylist Camille Bidaut Waddington…..spotted early on in New York by The Satorialist….she has beauty and a style that is so totally her own, I don’t think you could even call it fashion…..I think it’s that confidence in doing her own thing that makes her so exceptional, in a sea of head to toe look-at-me designer outfits, that are suddenly all over Paris, she stands out……for isn’t this what style is really about? being true to oneself? But too much runway does lead to fashion malaise…….it’s when I see women like Ursina Gysi, that makes me put down the black dress and put on the embroided Tiger jumper, because after all who doesn’t feel better not looking like everyone else?
