Never Too Late, for Beginners In Love……

As a long time Mike Mills fan….firstly of his brilliant art work, for he and Geoff McFetridge set the tone and standard in the nineties,  that you still see on almost any t-shirt you can buy around the world today. But with Beginners, he has let that go, and has become the film maker he was destined to be…..watching this film last night, was like reading a love letter left on the bus… warmed your heart in such an intimate way, it made you feel the movie was made just for you……he brought the wistfulness in his characters, I have only ever seen in french films of the seventies….their truth like many other peoples, isn’t so simple and easy…..not everyone falls in love and stays with that person…..not everyone runs to love, for such a big emotion, it is far easier to hide from, than be overwhelmed and crushed by it in the process… rarely have I ever seen this in a film…….and here it was……sincere and real……the story was inspired by Mike Mills’ father, who came out of a very dusty closet as an elderly man and inspired in him what it is to be true to oneself……but here, it’s all 3 characters who are coming out of a closet of their own making…..also magical is seeing Mike Mills hand drawing… was a completely beautiful way to incorporate  his art into a film that had already become a work of art…….and a special mention goes to the dog, who rightly stole the film….

I saw this at the MIFF last week by myself. Tears streamed down my face for most of the film! I loved it.
I did hear though that Mr McGregor was being a dirty dog and having an affair with the Frenchie while his wife was pregnant… hope the rumour isn’t true!
