A Night Out with Hope Gangloff…..

Hope Gangloff’s art is like meeting the most interesting person at the party…..you are left wanting to know more and more and can’t quite believe you weren’t friends already…at least I had this impression last night, when I saw that the New Yorker had listed her new show…..immediately something of Egon Schiele resonated and upon discovering she draws her friends, David Hockney’s early seventies portraits also came to mind…… but she is an original and her art is of her day…..based in New York, her background has been in illustration, producing yardage prints for labels such as Built by Wendy…….working in mostly pen and ink…she has created a world that is her own but it also may be yours…….her subjects reflect everyday living in downtown New York or Brooklyn….there is a realness and a gentleness that also made me think of Joseph Szabo’s Teenage photographs……her women are beautiful but always come across as strong…….looking at her work brings back memories of 101 nights out with my friends…..including the taxi ride home…..

All artwork by Hope Gangloff, Susan Inglett Gallery, New York
